Dudley Council’s Car Park Charges: A £3.5 Million Move That’s Just the Beginning
Dudley Council’s decision to bring back car park charges is set to generate over £3.5 million in revenue over three years, according to figures obtained through a Freedom of Information (FOI) request. The data reveals that in October 2024 alone, the Council made £136,189.15 from its car parks.

The return of charges has sparked debate, with some arguing it’s a necessary move to support council services, while others fear it could harm local businesses by discouraging visitors. Free parking had been a well-liked policy, but the Council has now opted to reintroduce fees as part of its wider financial strategy.
However, this is just the beginning. The FOI response also confirmed that Phase 2 of the Council’s Parking Strategy will focus on on-street parking, meaning more changes could be on the way. The Council has stated that impact assessments and wider public consultation will be carried out before further decisions are made.
For now, drivers in Dudley will have to get used to paying to park again, but with more changes on the horizon, this could be just the start of a bigger shake-up.
